Frequently Asked Questions

iPhone, iPad, MacBeginner17 min read

Quick, plain-language answers to the questions that come up most across Orrique: getting started, your data and iCloud, Orrique Pro, the AI features, sharing, and the small things that are easy to miss. Each answer is a starting point and links to the fuller article when there is more to know.

What is Orrique?

Orrique is a private journal for the fragrances you wear, love, and want. You build a collection of your bottles, log each time you wear something, rate how it performed, and over time the app shows you patterns in what you actually reach for. It runs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with an Apple Watch companion.

Do I need an account or a login?

No. There is no Orrique account to create. The app uses your own iCloud (if you turn on sync) so your collection follows you across your devices, but you never make a separate username or password.

How do I add my first fragrance? Free

There are three ways, shown right at the start. You can add a scent any time from the Collection tab using the plus button.

  1. Search the catalog. Type a brand or name and pick the match.

  2. Scan a bottle or box (Read Bottle). Point the camera at the label and let Orrique read the text and fill in the details.

  3. Enter it by hand. Type the name, brand, and any notes yourself.

See Getting Started and Collection.

Is Orrique free? Free

Yes, most of it. You can build your collection, log every wear, browse your diary, see your daily pick, and use the home screen widgets without paying. Some deeper features need Orrique Pro, an optional subscription. See Free vs Orrique Pro and Pro Subscription.

Can I save scent combinations I layer together? Free Pro

Yes. The Formulas section lets you build and save a layering combination as a formula, and The Layering Room helps you find pairings that work: pick a scent or a base, choose the effect you are after, and see which of your things layer well, each with a plain reason. Building and saving formulas is free. The optional AI “Why this works” read on each pairing is part of Pro. See Formulas and Layering.

Where is my data stored?

On your device. When you first set up Orrique, you choose a storage mode: iCloud Sync or Local Only. iCloud Sync is selected by default. With iCloud Sync, your journal stays on all your devices and is private to your iCloud. With Local Only, everything stays on this device only. You can change this later in Settings, under Data & Sync.

Is my diary private?

Yes. Your collection and diary are yours. If you use iCloud Sync, the data lives in your own private iCloud, not on a public server. Sharing community data and helping improve the shared catalog are both separate, off by default, and opt-in. See Privacy and App Lock and Community and Contributions.

Can I use Orrique without internet?

Yes. Your collection and diary live on the device, so you can browse, log wears, rate, and add notes fully offline. Only the parts that reach out need a connection: iCloud Sync to other devices, downloading the fragrance catalog, and community data. Those catch up once you are back online.

I set up Orrique on a new device and my collection is not there yet. Did I lose it?

Almost certainly not. On a new device that uses iCloud Sync, your collection has to download first, and that can take a moment. Orrique shows a “Loading your collection from iCloud” message while this happens, and your scents and progress appear as they finish syncing.

  1. Confirm you are signed in to the same iCloud account you used before.

  2. Check that the device is connected to the internet.

  3. Give it time. Your scents appear as they finish syncing.

  4. You can still add a scent by hand in the meantime.

See iCloud and Sync and Troubleshooting.

How can I check whether iCloud sync is working?

Open Settings and look at the Data & Sync section. The status row reads one of these states:

StatusWhat it means
Checking…Orrique is looking up your account.
Local onlyYou are not using iCloud Sync.
Synced with iCloudSync is active and your account is available.
Sign in to iCloudiCloud Sync is on but you are not signed in.
iCloud restrictediCloud is limited on the device, for example by parental controls.
iCloud unavailableiCloud cannot be reached for another reason.

If it says “Sign in to iCloud”, sign in to iCloud in your device’s System Settings. See iCloud and Sync.

Can I switch from Local Only to iCloud Sync later (or back)?

Yes. Open Settings, go to Data & Sync, and change the Storage option. See Settings and iCloud and Sync.

How do I back up my journal?

Open Settings and go to Backup & Export. You can export a full backup file that contains your scents, diary entries, combos, and photos, and you can import one later to restore. You can also export your collection and diary as spreadsheet (CSV) files. See Backup and Export.

What happens when I import a backup?

A full backup import replaces the current journal on this device. Before it does, Orrique shows you what the backup contains and asks you to confirm with a “Replace current journal?” prompt. CSV collection import is different: it adds only new scents and nothing is overwritten. See Backup and Export.

What happens when I delete a scent or a diary entry?

Deleting a scent removes it and its photos, but your diary entries for it are kept. Deleting a diary entry is permanent: there is no undo. With iCloud Sync turned on, a delete syncs to your other devices in the background. If you want a way to restore later, export a full backup first; you can import it again to bring your journal back. See Backup and Export.

If I delete the app, does my data go with it?

Deleting the app removes the copy on that device. If you used Local Only, that was the only copy, so export a backup first. If you used iCloud Sync, your journal still lives in your private iCloud and comes back when you reinstall and sign in to the same account. To clear everything everywhere, you would delete your scents and diary inside the app while sync is on. See iCloud and Sync and Backup and Export.

What does Orrique Pro unlock? Pro

Pro unlocks the deeper features: Wear Patterns (cost per wear, season drift, quiet favorites, and performance averages, plus an AI read of the gaps in your collection), your personal Scent Profile, Compare scents, “Layers well with” suggestions on a scent’s page, calendar export of your diary, watermark-free share cards, and unlimited Read Bottle scans beyond the free trial. See Free vs Orrique Pro and Pro Subscription.

What stays free without Pro? Free

Adding and organizing your collection, shelves, and wishlist; logging wears, ratings, moods, and notes; Today’s Pick; the home screen and Lock Screen widgets; Scent Twin recommendations in Discover; backing up and restoring your journal and CSV export and import; and a free trial of Read Bottle. See Free vs Orrique Pro.

How do I subscribe, restore, cancel, or manage Pro?

Everything lives in one place: open Settings and go to the Orrique Pro section. You can also tap any locked Pro feature to open the subscription screen.

ActionWhere to go
SubscribeSettings, then the Orrique Pro card (monthly or yearly; the price shown comes from the App Store for your region).
Restore on a new deviceSettings, then Orrique Pro, then Restore Purchases (use the same Apple Account you bought it with).
CancelSettings, then Orrique Pro, then Manage Subscription (Apple handles cancellation).
ManageSettings, then Orrique Pro, then Manage Subscription.

See Pro Subscription.

How do I log that I wore something?

Open the Diary tab and tap New entry, or use the “What are you wearing today?” prompt. You can also log from Today’s Pick, from a fragrance’s page, from a widget, or by asking Siri. See Diary and Today.

Can I log the same scent again quickly?

Yes. In the Diary feed, swipe or long-press an entry and choose “Log this again today”, or open an entry and use the Options menu. See Diary.

What is a wear session?

A wear session tracks a single wear live, from when you spray to how it settles. When a session is active, a Live Activity can appear on your Lock Screen with the scent name and elapsed time. You start one from the log form (“Track this wear live”), from Today’s Pick, or from a diary entry. See Diary.

What is a next-day rating?

Some impressions only land the day after, so Orrique can prompt you to rate yesterday’s wear: how it held up, its longevity, and so on. You will see a “waiting for a next-day rating” prompt in your diary digest, and you can turn on a daily reminder in Settings. See Diary and Settings.

Can Orrique remind me to log or rate?

Yes. You can turn on a morning prompt to log the day’s scent, a next-day reminder to rate yesterday’s wear, and a low-stock heads-up when a favorite is running low. These live in Settings under notifications. See Settings and Widgets, Siri, and Shortcuts.

How does Today’s Pick choose a scent? Free

It draws from your own collection and considers things like season and, if you have weather turned on, the current weather. It is free to use. See Today.

Why does my pick mention the weather?

If you turned on automatic weather, your pick can factor in today’s conditions, and you may see a small weather label on the card. Your location is used only when weather is on, and it is stored with that diary entry. You can turn weather off in Settings. See Today and Settings.

Which features use AI, and where does it run?

Orrique’s AI features run on your device using Apple Intelligence. They include the weekly recap in your diary, the review draft composer on a scent’s page, the gaps read in Wear Patterns, your Scent Profile, the Wear Coach note on Today’s Pick, and the AI refinement in Read Bottle. Some of these are free and some need Pro. See AI Features.

My device does not show the AI features. Why?

The on-device AI features need a device that supports Apple Intelligence, and Apple Intelligence needs to be turned on. If your device does not support it, Orrique falls back to its manual tools where possible, so the rest of the app still works. The status for these features describes what is happening: “On-device AI ready”, “On-device AI is off”, “On-device AI is preparing”, or “Manual helper mode”. See AI Features and What Works on Each Device.

Is Scent Twin a Pro feature? Free

No. Scent Twin recommendations (“Scents like the ones you reach for”) are free. They appear in Discover once your taste profile is ready, which happens after you have a few fragrances with notes in your collection. See Discover and Dupes and AI Features.

How does Read Bottle work, and is it limited? Free trial Pro

Read Bottle uses the camera to read the text on a bottle or box, then helps fill in the fragrance details. The free plan includes a trial of 3 scans. After that, unlimited scans need Pro. Your remaining free scans are shown in Settings. See AI Features and Pro Subscription.

Can I make a shareable card from a scent or a diary entry?

Yes. Tap Share from a fragrance page, a diary entry, your collection, or your wishlist to open the share card editor, where you can pick a template, change fonts, and adjust the layout. See Sharing.

Can I remove the Orrique watermark from a share card? Pro

The watermark sits in the corner of the card. Removing it (watermark-free shares) is a Pro feature. Without Pro the mark stays on the card. See Sharing and Pro Subscription.

Can I lock the app so other people cannot read my diary?

Yes. In Settings, under Privacy, turn on “Require Face ID to unlock”. When it is on, Orrique asks for Face ID or Touch ID (with your device passcode as a fallback) to open, and it re-locks after the app has been in the background for a short while. See Privacy and App Lock.

Why can I not see prices in the app?

You likely turned on Hide Prices, a display setting that keeps cost and value figures out of view. Open Settings and turn Hide Prices off to bring them back. See Settings and Privacy and App Lock.

Is my data shared with anyone by default?

No. Contributing to community data and helping improve the shared catalog are both off until you turn them on. See Community and Contributions and Privacy and App Lock.

Are there home screen widgets?

Yes. Orrique offers widgets such as Scent of the Day, Pinned Scent, Rhythm, Rate Yesterday, and Running Low, in home screen and Lock Screen sizes (Lock Screen widgets are on iPhone). See Widgets, Siri, and Shortcuts.

Can I use Siri or Shortcuts?

Yes. You can speak phrases like “Wear [scent] in Orrique” or “Rate yesterday in Orrique”, build Shortcuts, and find your scents in Spotlight search. See Widgets, Siri, and Shortcuts.

Why is the Apple Watch app empty or showing “Open Orrique on your iPhone”?

The Watch app gets today’s pick and your data from your iPhone. If it shows “Open Orrique on your iPhone to sync today’s pick”, open the app on your iPhone with your Watch nearby so it can sync. See Apple Watch.

Is there a Mac app, and is it different?

Yes. Orrique runs on Mac with a menu bar status item, full app menus, and keyboard shortcuts for logging and moving between sections. The features are the same app, adapted to the Mac. Some iPhone-only system features (like the camera-based Read Bottle and certain widgets) are not part of the Mac experience. See Mac App and What Works on Each Device.

What is different on iPad?

Not much. The iPad runs essentially the full iPhone app, laid out for the larger screen with a sidebar. The same logging, diary, insights, and sharing are all there. For the full device-by-device picture, see What Works on Each Device.

I am moving to a new phone. What should I do?

If you used iCloud Sync, your journal arrives on the new phone once you sign in to the same iCloud account; just give it time to download. A few extra steps make the switch painless.

  1. On the old phone, export a full backup from Settings, then Backup & Export. This is your safety net even if you sync.

  2. On the new phone, sign in to the same iCloud account and open Orrique. Watch for the “Loading your collection from iCloud” message while it downloads.

  3. If you had Local Only, import the backup file from Settings, then Backup & Export, to restore your journal.

  4. If you had Pro, open Settings, then Orrique Pro, then Restore Purchases (use the same Apple Account).

See iCloud and Sync, Backup and Export, and Pro Subscription.

Most of these answers are starting points; the linked article walks through the full flow and any limits. If something looks missing right after a fresh install on a new device, it is most likely still syncing from iCloud rather than gone.
