Not sure which to open?

A backup is a file you save and can restore later, even onto a brand new phone. iCloud sync is different: it keeps two or more of your devices live and in step automatically. If you are moving to a new device or want your iPhone, iPad, and Mac to match, start with iCloud and Sync. If you just want a safety copy on hand, use Backup and export.
